Devoted or Distracted?

Today at Highland Baptist Church, Pastor Danny Gardner's sermon was from Luke 10:37-42. This is the story of two sisters, Martha and Mary. Too often, in our churches, we focus on things like seating arrangements, choice of music, service times, etc. We, like Martha, get our priorities wrong.

We are to be more like Mary, setting at the feet of Jesus and listening. King David asked for one thing, to live in the presence of the LORD. Jesus wants us to be with him more than he wants what we think we are doing for him.

When our focus is on Jesus we are not allowing our lives to be dictated by things that will pass away. Another thing this passage teaches us is that Jesus championed equality for women. By allowing Mary to sit at his feet, a place of honor reserved for a man, and allowing Martha's interruption, showed that he valued men and women equally.

God's answer to what is the most important thing for our life is being in his presence and listening to his word.
